How to Analyse Secondary School Cut-Off Distances

Introduction

Families often hear statements such as "Last year's cut-off was 0.8 miles." This figure is frequently treated as a fixed benchmark. In reality, cut-off distances fluctuate annually based on applicant volume and sibling priority patterns.

Understanding volatility is more important than knowing a single data point.

Why Cut-Offs Change

Distance cut-offs move because of:

  • Birth rate variations
  • Housing turnover patterns
  • Sibling cohorts entering Year 7
  • Changes in Published Admission Numbers (PAN)
  • Faith or priority category shifts

A single-year figure is a snapshot, not a guarantee.

What to Examine

Instead of asking "What was last year's cut-off?", ask:

  • What were the cut-offs for the last 5 years?
  • What is the range of fluctuation?
  • Has there been upward or downward trend?
  • Were there abnormal pandemic or bulge-year distortions?

Multi-year modelling reduces risk.

The Danger of Marginal Moves

If historic cut-offs fluctuate between 0.6 and 0.9 miles, purchasing at 0.85 miles is not secure. Marginal positioning is inherently unstable.

Borough Variability

In densely populated boroughs, cut-offs can move sharply due to small demographic changes. In lower-density areas, variation may be more gradual.
